Artist Spotlight: Red Carter Swimsuit Collection
Born in Santa Ana California, designer Red Carter studied at Otis/Parson School of Art and Design in Los Angeles, CA. Growing up in Southern California, Red had the perfect opportunity to learn valuable lessons about swimwear fashion. Red was a competitive swimmer and record-breaker in sprinting, diving and water polo. After his sports career ended, he entered the entertainment industry. He has been featured in roles in commercials, voiceovers, and has had small movie roles. Red has always been an entertainer at heart, and so he visualizes himself as the Austin Powers of
the bikini business.
His career in junior sportswear and active wear began in San Francisco, where he worked at Esprit under the direction of Suzy Tompkins. He then moved to Southern California and held positions with Guess Jeans, the Marciano Brothers, Rampage, Mossimo, Victoria's Secret, Linda Wachner, andeventually Oscar de la Renta. The results of Red's vast experience have culminated in the understanding of fit, form and function, unparalleled in the swimwear industry. His use of details from both the swim and sportswear categories allow him to set himself apart by his understanding of subtle detailing that he juxtaposes with bold, expressive prints. Every swimsuit that Red Carter makes has a signature red button on the back as Red's personal trademark.
Red moved to South Beach, Florida in 2003 and immediately realized that Miami was missing something on its beaches. As he watched hotel after hotel rise and be remodeled, Red noticed that the important designers of the world came to South Beach, but they never stayed. Then and there, Red decided that he would be the voice of an emerging culture and try to create a product to embody the attitudes and lifestyles of Miami and South Beach.
The Red Carter collection consists of his first impressions of the culture and lifestyle of Miami. He uses bold prints and styling that can be seen on the beach going from day to night. Red has used the contrasting cultural influences of Miami to express the melting pot of South Beach style. With Miami's mix of New Yorkers, Europeans, and Latin Americans, Red has been inspired by the rich colors and architectural landscapes of an evolving metropolis.
Red Carter presented his collection for men and women at the Raleigh Hotel in Miami Beach this past Summer. Both his South Beach and Glam collection rocked the runway with sexy cut-outs, colorful boho prints, and unique details of crochet, sequence, wood beads, seashells, mirrors, and coins. His pieces are being now sold across the country at Bloomingdale's, Lord and Taylor, Nordstrom, Saks, exclusive boutiques like Intermix and Rebel, catalogs like Victoria's Secret, online, and even internationally in Jamaica, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and the UK.
